In search of Lime Sources part 2
In search of sources of Lime for UNESCO. Found after a 5 km walk from the hamlet and church of ኖራ ኢየሱስ, ‘Lime Jesus’, in the Ethiopian Highland is an escarpment where lime has been reported, before. But unfortunately, the area only contains shales with some calcite minerals within them, but no carbonate. The hamlet however is surrounded by fields with burnt lime deposits in the surface soil, above volcanic rock. It is thought this was a collection and burning point for very pure travertine-based limestone. The search for its source continues.
