Analysis & Investigation

Often modern paints and strong cement-based mortars used on old buildings can damage their fabric.

This harm can range from the exaggerated decay of softer stone and brick to full scale collapse of cob walls, behind cement renders. To help those involved with the care and maintenance of old buildings we can help determine if modern materials, used as part of later refurbishments, are causing problems for a building. As well as establishing which original mortars where used to construct the walls and which paint finishes were used to decorate the plasters and timberwork.

Additionally, buildings are damaged by contaminants, especially salts within them, being transported by water towards their inner and outer skins. To help develop targeted remedial works, we can help you identify these contaminants and suggest strategies for dealing with them.
