New Traditionally Built Church
It was great to see the new church at Daga Estanfanos nearing completion, it is a credit to the craftsmen, the monks who have laboured hard on this project, and to the young Engineer, Teddy from Bahir Dar. It has been constructed in the traditional way of past royal churches, with volcanic rock bedded on very lime rich mortar, lime floors, lime plasters, Juniper for the structural timbers and for the outer veranda; and Wanza wood for the windows and doors; topped off with a thatched roof. After drying out it will be richly decorated in traditional orthodox paintings, that are still inspired by the 2nd Gondarine style, from the 18th century.
